Gates of Olympus: story and setting

The studio’s pitch is a single line, ‘join Zeus for an electrifying adventure’, and the set-up is just that simple. At the gates of Olympus, Zeus sends multiplier symbols down with the lightning.

Later variants such as Gates of Olympus 1000, Super Scatter and 2500 all build on this original, so it works as the yardstick for reading their numbers. Starlight Princess, which keeps the same maths under a different theme, is the other key to understanding it.

How it plays, summarised from the studio’s description

Pay anywhere
8 to 30 matching symbols anywhere on the grid pay up to 50x, and tumbles keep wins coming.
Multipliers up to 500x
They can land in both the base game and free spins.
15 free spins
Triggered by four or more scatters. Multipliers landing on a winning spin join a running total that is applied to that win.
Scatter pays
3x for 4, 5x for 5, 100x for 6 or more (from the game server’s paytable).
Ante and bonus buy
Ante costs 1.25x per spin and the bonus buy 100x; both return 96.50% on the server.

Paytable from the studio’s demo server. The five 6×5 pay-anywhere games in this library share it, and all five pay 3x, 5x and 100x for 4, 5 and 6+ scatters. Twelve or more top symbols (50x) pay 200 times as much as 8 or 9 of the lowest (0.25x).

RTP differs by 0.00 points across modes and buys. What changes is how much each decision costs, and so how much a single decision can lose. Against the base bet, every mode caps at 5,000x, so raising the cost per spin with an ante lowers the cap relative to what you pay. A thousand base spins (KRW 1,000,000 staked) carry an expected loss of KRW 35,000.

The chance of each event and the expected loss over 100, 1,000 and 10,000 spins of Gates of Olympus

Even over 10,000 spins (about 2.8 hours at one spin a second) the chance of landing the max win even once is 1.4%, while the expected loss over that stretch is KRW 350,000.

Worked out from the studio’s published average frequencies as 1 − (1 − 1/frequency)^spins. It treats spins as independent; real sessions swing widely around these figures.

Reading the numbers

  • Its maths matches Starlight Princess exactly. The server gives the same RTP modes, the same 5,000x cap at 1 in 697,350, the same symbol and scatter paytables and the same 15 free spins. Think of the two as twins with different themes.
  • A max-win frequency of 1 in 697,350 is roughly once every 8 days at one spin per second, nonstop. Next to the Super Scatter edition’s 21 years, the original swings far less.
  • Ante keeps the same 96.50% RTP. You bet 25% more at the same rate, so the expected loss per spin also rises by 25%. The server caps an ante spin at 4,000x the amount staked.
  • Even the top symbol pays only 50x for 12+, so big wins come almost entirely from multipliers. Going by the paytable, most 8- or 9-symbol wins pay less than the stake; the lowest symbol pays 0.25x.
